SHOULDER HEMIREPLACEMENT

BONE CARE CLINIC | DR. VINAY KUMARASWAMY | BANGALORE INDIA

Shoulder hemireplacement, also known as hemiarthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces the damaged or diseased humeral head (the ball) of the shoulder joint with a prosthetic implant. Unlike a total shoulder replacement, which replaces both the ball and socket of the joint, a hemireplacement only replaces the ball. This procedure is often performed in cases where the socket of the joint (glenoid) is still healthy and does not require replacement.

There are several reasons why a patient may require a shoulder hemireplacement. One common reason is a fracture of the humeral head that cannot be repaired through other methods, such as casting or immobilization. Hemireplacement may also be used to treat degenerative conditions of the shoulder joint, such as osteoarthritis or avascular necrosis.

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves an incision on the side of the shoulder. The damaged humeral head is removed and the remaining bone is shaped to fit the prosthetic implant. The implant is then secured in place using cement or screws, and the incision is closed. Following surgery, patients will typically need to wear a sling to support the arm for a period of several weeks. Physical therapy is also an important part of the recovery process, helping to restore range of motion and strength to the shoulder joint.

While a shoulder hemireplacement can be an effective treatment option for many patients, it is important to consider the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure. These may include infection, nerve damage, and implant failure or loosening. Additionally, some patients may experience ongoing pain or limited range of motion following surgery.

After the surgery, patients may need to stay in the hospital for a few days for monitoring and rehabilitation. Physical therapy will be an essential part of recovery, starting as early as the first day after surgery. Physical therapists will guide patients through exercises that help strengthen the shoulder and improve range of motion. Patients may also be given a home exercise program to follow to continue their rehabilitation.

As with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications associated with shoulder hemireplacement. These may include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and the need for revision surgery. However, with careful evaluation of the patient's individual situation and careful surgical technique, these risks can be minimized.

If you are experiencing shoulder pain or decreased range of motion, it is important to seek the advice of a qualified orthopedic specialist.
