SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY

BONE CARE CLINIC | DR. VINAY KUMARASWAMY | BANGALORE INDIA

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the use of a small camera, called an arthroscope, to visualize and treat various conditions affecting the shoulder joint. This procedure has gained popularity over the years as it offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including smaller incisions, reduced scarring, less pain, and faster recovery times. In this article, we will explore in detail what shoulder arthroscopy is, when it is necessary, and how it is performed.

What is Shoulder Arthroscopy?

Shoulder arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat a variety of shoulder conditions, such as rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement, labral tears, and shoulder instability. During the procedure, a small incision is made near the shoulder joint, and an arthroscope, a thin tube with a camera and light at the end, is inserted. The arthroscope transmits real-time images of the shoulder joint to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to see the structures inside the joint without the need for a large incision.

When is Shoulder Arthroscopy Necessary?

Shoulder arthroscopy may be recommended for a variety of conditions affecting the shoulder joint, including:

  • Rotator cuff tears: When the tendons that attach the rotator cuff muscles to the shoulder bone are torn, the shoulder may become weak and painful, making it difficult to lift the arm.

  • Shoulder impingement: This occurs when the space between the rotator cuff and the acromion (a bone on the top of the shoulder) narrows, causing pain and limited mobility.

  • Labral tears: The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket, providing stability to the joint. When the labrum is torn, it can cause pain, weakness, and instability in the shoulder.

  • Shoulder instability: When the shoulder joint is loose or dislocates, it can cause pain, weakness, and a sensation of the shoulder "popping out" of the joint.

How is Shoulder Arthroscopy Performed?

Before the procedure, the patient is given general anesthesia, which will put them to sleep and prevent any pain during the surgery. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will make a small incision near the shoulder joint and insert the arthroscope. Additional small incisions may be made to allow the surgeon to insert surgical instruments to repair any damage.

The surgeon will then examine the inside of the shoulder joint using the arthroscope and diagnose the underlying condition. If any damage is present, the surgeon will use the surgical instruments to repair or remove the damaged tissue. Once the repair is complete, the arthroscope and surgical instruments are removed, and the incisions are closed using sutures or surgical staples.

Recovery from Shoulder Arthroscopy

Recovery time from shoulder arthroscopy varies depending on the type of procedure performed and the extent of the damage. Most patients can expect to wear a sling for a few days to several weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery. Physical therapy is typically prescribed to help restore range of motion, strengthen the shoulder, and prevent stiffness. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few weeks to a few months, depending on the extent of the surgery.
