KNEE LIGAMENT SURGERY

BONE CARE CLINIC | DR. VINAY KUMARASWAMY | BANGALORE INDIA

Knee ligament surgery is a type of orthopaedic surgery that is used to repair or reconstruct a damaged ligament in the knee. Knee ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect the bones in the knee joint and provide stability to the knee. When these ligaments are damaged, they can cause pain, swelling, and instability in the knee.

The most common types of knee ligament injuries are the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and the MCL (medial collateral ligament). ACL injuries often occur during sports activities that involve sudden stops, jumping, or changes in direction. MCL injuries are usually the result of a direct blow to the outside of the knee, such as during a football tackle.

If conservative treatments such as rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) and physiotherapy do not relieve the symptoms of a knee ligament injury, surgery may be necessary. Dr. Vinay Kumaraswamy, our Orthopaedic Specialist at The Bone Care Clinic, will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if knee ligament surgery is necessary. This may include a physical exam, imaging tests such as an MRI, and a discussion of the patient's symptoms and medical history.

The type of surgery recommended will depend on the type and extent of the ligament injury. For ACL injuries, surgery may involve repairing or reconstructing the ligament using a graft, which is usually taken from the patient's own body or from a donor. For MCL injuries, surgery may involve repairing the damaged ligament using sutures or other devices.

Before surgery, Dr. Vinay will work with the patient to determine the most appropriate surgical approach based on their individual needs and goals. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take 1-2 hours. During the surgery, Dr. Vinay will make several small incisions around the knee and insert an arthroscope, a tiny camera, to visualize the inside of the joint. Using specialized instruments, he will repair or reconstruct the damaged ligament.

After surgery, patients will need to undergo a rehabilitation program to regain strength and flexibility in the knee. Our clinic has two Physiotherapists who work closely with Dr. Vinay to provide comprehensive care before and after surgery. Pre-operative physiotherapy can help prepare patients for surgery and reduce their recovery time. Post-operative physiotherapy is crucial for ensuring a full and speedy recovery. Our Physiotherapists work with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to their individual needs and goals.

Recovery time can vary depending on the patient's age, overall health, and the extent of the injury. However, most patients can return to low-impact activities such as walking and cycling within a few weeks. High-impact activities such as running and jumping may need to be avoided for several months. Dr. Vinay will work with each patient to develop a gradual return-to-activity plan to ensure a safe and successful recovery.

The benefits of knee ligament surgery are many. First, it can help restore stability and function to the knee, allowing patients to resume their normal activities without pain or discomfort. Second, it can prevent further damage to the knee, reducing the risk of developing arthritis or other complications. Finally, knee ligament surgery has a high success rate and can improve a patient's quality of life.
