ARTHROSCOPIC ACL RECONSTRUCTION

BONE CARE CLINIC | DR. VINAY KUMARASWAMY | BANGALORE INDIA

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a surgical procedure used to repair a torn ACL, one of the major ligaments in the knee. The ACL is one of four ligaments that connect the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). It plays a crucial role in stabilizing the knee joint and preventing it from sliding forward or rotating excessively. When the ACL is torn, the knee can become unstable and painful, making it difficult to walk, run, or play sports.

ACL injuries are common among athletes, but they can also occur during everyday activities such as twisting, pivoting, or stopping suddenly. Symptoms of an ACL injury include a popping sound or sensation in the knee, swelling, pain, and difficulty moving the knee.

ACL reconstruction involves replacing the torn ligament with a graft, usually taken from the patient's own body or from a donor. The graft is attached to the bone using screws or other devices and gradually integrates into the knee joint over time, providing stability and support. The most commonly used grafts are the patellar tendon, hamstring tendon, or cadaveric (allograft) tendon.

Before surgery, Dr. Vinay Kumaraswamy, our Orthopaedic Specialist at The Bone Care Clinic, will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if ACL reconstruction is necessary. This may include a physical exam, imaging tests such as an MRI, and a discussion of the patient's symptoms and medical history. Once a diagnosis is made, Dr. Vinay will work with the patient to determine the most appropriate type of graft and surgical approach based on their individual needs and goals.

The surgery is typically performed under spinal anesthesia and can take 1-2 hours. During the surgery, Dr. Vinay will make several small incisions around the knee and insert an arthroscope, a tiny camera, to visualize the inside of the joint. Using specialized instruments, he will remove the damaged ACL and prepare the bone to receive the graft. The graft is then secured to the bone using screws or other devices.

After surgery, patients will need to undergo a rehabilitation program to regain strength and flexibility in the knee. Our clinic has two Physiotherapists who work closely with Dr. Vinay to provide comprehensive care before and after surgery. Pre-operative physiotherapy can help prepare patients for surgery and reduce their recovery time. Post-operative physiotherapy is crucial for ensuring a full and speedy recovery. Our Physiotherapists work with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to their individual needs and goals.

Recovery time can vary depending on the patient's age, overall health, and the extent of the injury. However, most patients can return to low-impact activities such as walking and cycling within a few weeks. High-impact activities such as running and jumping may need to be avoided for several months. Dr. Vinay will work with each patient to develop a gradual return-to-activity plan to ensure a safe and successful recovery.

The benefits of ACL reconstruction are many. First, it can help restore stability and function to the knee, allowing patients to resume their normal activities without pain or discomfort. Second, it can prevent further damage to the knee, reducing the risk of developing arthritis or other complications. Finally, ACL reconstruction has a high success rate and can improve a patient's quality of life.

At The Bone Care Clinic, we understand that ACL injuries can be devastating and affect a patient's overall well-being. That's why we take a holistic approach to care, focusing not only on the knee but also on the patient's overall health and well-being. We work closely with each patient to understand their unique situation and develop a treatment plan that is right for them.
